Some Common Types Of Martial Arts Supplies

When you begin your study of martial arts, you will discover that there are a wide variety of martial arts supplies that novices and professionals alike use on a regular basis. The main type of gear includes weapons, dojo mats, breaking boards, uniforms, targets, protective equipment, and related supplies.

Weapons are a broad category, particularly when it comes to weapons related to or used in martial arts. One of the most traditional types of weapons is the Japanese bow, or Yumi, a term that includes both the longbow and the short bow. The Yumi is traditionally made out of laminated bamboo and is asymmetrically shaped. The string of the Yumi is traditionally made of hemp, but most modern day bows have synthetically made strings. Historians hypothesize that the unique shape of the Yumi allowed it to be used more easily by fighters on horseback.

Dojo mats are standard martial arts supplies for any karate studio. Their cushioned surface is designed to reduce the impact of a fall during practice or a match, and ultimately, reduce the likelihood and severity of injuries. The main types of mats include standard, and grappling and take down mats, which are designed to absorb more impact than regular mats.

Breaking boards are used in breaking demonstrations, in which martial artists use a part of their body, usually their hands or feet, to break objects like boards, bricks, and occasionally blocks of ice. Wooden breaking boards are the most common item, and are available in several different sizes. There are even very small boards designed for use by very young children.

Uniforms are another essential part of any martial arts students supply list. The uniform, or gi, is usually white, but comes in other colors as well. There are uniform variations between martial arts styles, but all uniforms are designed to be lightweight, flexible, and durable. Your instructor will be able to help you choose the best type of uniform for you, depending on your discipline.

Martial arts supplies come in all shapes, sizes, and varieties. Some are designed specifically for use within a certain discipline or field, while other types, like dojo mats, are designed to be used by all students of martial arts. When you are shopping for your supplies, be sure to purchase the correct types. Again, your instructor will be able to help you with this and provide suggestions as to styles and brands.

Finding Out The Difference Between Karate And Tae Kwon Do

The two most common martial arts practiced in North America are karate and tae kwon do. Many wonder what the difference between these two martial arts is. This is especially the case for those who are just starting to look around for a martial arts studio. After all, most practitioners in both karate and tae kwon do seem to wear the same type of white gi uniforms with various colored belts.

Modern traditional karate was developed in the islands of Okinawa in Japan after some influences from Chinese martial arts. There are actually different styles of karate but they are all commonly considered as Japanese martial arts today. The colored belt system was developed to show the various ranks of karate practitioners with white depicting novices and black belts (with various degrees) representing instructor levels and higher. There is a whole range of other different colors in between. Modern tae kwon do was developed in Korea after much influence from Japanese karate during the occupation by Japan. Indeed, tae kwon do is sometimes referred to as Korean karate. The Koreans adopted similar white uniforms along with a colored belt ranking system for tae kwon do. Today, there are two main styles of tae kwon do, one under the International Tae Kwon Do Federation and the other under the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. Many tae kwon do schools have added a black lining to their white uniforms for black belt levels. A V-neck top is often seen in schools affiliated with the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. There are also older Korean styles including tang soo do and moo duk kwan. Some of the more Americanized karate and tae kwon do schools also use uniforms with other colors such as red, black and blue in addition to the traditional white.

It can be generalized that in karate, one would use their arms or hands for 60% of the time for strikes or blocks while the use of legs for kicking will be about 40%. This breakdown is seen in the many forms or katas of karate which are set routines which simulate fighting against imaginary opponents using martial arts techniques. The forms from tae kwon do would have the opposite percentage breakdown with 40% hands and 60% legs. In tae kwon do, there is also more emphasis on higher kicks to the head level than in karate. Tae kwon do practitioners also utilize more jumping or flying kicks where one is airborne while executing kicking techniques. The tae kwon do forms or patterns are generally a bit shorter and less complex than the karate forms. Some tae kwon do schools have been known to use the odd karate form in its curriculum as well.

In North America as well as other parts of the world, there are separate traditional competitions for karate and tae kwon do. However, the open martial arts tournaments in North America often have competitors from both karate and tae kwon do competing together. Some of the larger open martial arts competition events will have separate forms divisions for Japanese karate and Korean tae kwon do competitors but the fighting or sparring divisions will usually be combined. Many black belts in tae kwon do end up studying karate as well and the opposite has been true too. Tae kwon do has received more publicity in recent years since its introduction as an Olympic sport. The style and rules used for the Olympic version of tae kwon do fighting comes from the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF). Both karate and tae kwon do are considered as hard style martial arts in North America today (as opposed to soft styles such as the many versions of Chinese kung fu).

Martial Arts Supplies for Training

The term Martial Arts is an all encompassing term that means The Art of War. it is taken from the name Mars the Roman god of war. In the sense that martial arts are simply the art of war all forms of combat that are codified and traditional in their teaching can be considered martial arts regardless of their national origin.

In the popular sense, however, most martial arts are thought of as being of Asian origins, but even here we see a variety of forms and differing styles, and many of these varying forms are connected in some way with their own religious believes or philosophical viewpoints.

Martial arts supplies like the forms they support are many and varying. Some top names in the business are Century, Gripmaster, UMAB, Grant, MotionRx, Macho, and Primal Impact, and you can find these brands at most respected martial arts vendors. All supplies should come guaranteed for quality and satisfactions, because from the uniform to the gear and weapons these items are not intended to be used gently.

New students looking to stock up on the supplies they will need or teaching centers that are just setting up or restocking will be looking for some basic martial arts supplies to have around at all times for training purposes. The first and most basic is the uniform. Some martial arts centers provide their own uniforms when you purchase a membership and their concern will be providing those through a qualified and trustworthy source. For new students, however, it might also be desirable to purchase additional uniforms and other workout apparel for private practice.

Beyond the uniform other desirable items may include practice equipment and protection gear. Every student of the martial arts want to be able to break boards with their fists, and for this purpose a popular item for students and centers to purchase are rebreakable boards that simulate the strength and thickness of different types of stone and wood. Kicking shields are another useful training tool and even these come in varying types to simulate the strength and resistance of opponents one might face. Kicking shields and target mitts are a great practice tool and alternative to all-out sparring, and finding the appropriate and safe Sparring gear is also important.

A kick or punch thrown no matter how light is still a real kick or punch and it is important to wear the necessary protection. A qualified martial arts supplies vendor should be able to provide different strengths of protection for the head, hands, feet, and chest as well as mouth guards and face shields. The best way to become skilled at martial arts is by using your hands and feet to fight off opponents through sparring exercises, but for more advanced training some martial arts centers will choose to train using weapons as well. Sai, Swords, Nunchakus, Tonfas, Bo Staffs, and Kamas are just some of the weapons that studios might choose to train with, but these weapons are strictly for those trained to use them and can even be illegal to own in some places. Most studios that train with these will not ask their students to purchase them, but instead they will provide them as supplies of the center to be used under careful supervision.

Black Kitchen Appliances- Sleek, Sophisticated, Serious

Black is the new black in the kitchen fashion world. In many cultures, the colour black is symbol of authority and modesty and is a sign of due respect. In Japanese culture, black is a symbol of nobility, age and experience and a black belt is a mark of achievement and seniority in martial arts such as karate and judo. But even in the UK, Black Tie functions are a type of sophisticated and smart gathering, black also denotes prestige- many limousines are black and traditionally our police cars were black and white, demanding respect and authority.

Black kitchen appliances certainly demand and earn that respect. The simple uniform colour looks sleek and modest in a wooden kitchen and blends in perfectly with dark wood surfaces, but also contrasts brilliantly with opposite colours such as white and even stainless steel cupboards and worktops. Black is a truly versatile colour.

Most top kitchen manufacturers offer a choice of black kitchen appliances, including refrigerators and freezers, cookers, dishwashers, washing machines and even wine coolers amongst others. There are a couple of options available to you if you want to redesign your whole kitchen with black appliances. You can obviously buy the whole appliance, but depending on your budget, there is an option to cheat in some cases until you have the money to buy the real thing. Some manufacturers have begun to produce black frames for appliances that you may have already purchased. This is not available in all cases and it depends upon the appliances that you already own, but here is an example.

Kitchen manufacturer, Smeg, now offer a black microwave frame to fit a range of their microwaves at around £100 or just over, which is great for people with microwaves that have already gotten damaged or for people that fancy a change to a black kitchen appliance. Linear also do something similar. They now offer a black microwave cover to match all the Linear Series ovens. This model has a stainless steel trim on black glass and a smooth gliding lift door with a hydraulic hinged lifting system and costs just under £330.

Black fridge freezers are becoming more and more popular and Smeg offer an American style model amongst others for just under £2000. Rangemaster’s Kitchener range of cookers are available in black and come with heavy duty black cast iron pan supports- the twin oven dual fuel model available at just under £2000.Even taps are now available with black controls making it even easier to coordinate the whole kitchen. Smeg GENOA’s chrome tap with black joystick control also has a swivel spout and an aerator and has a market price of around £200.

There is no question that black is back. And your black kitchen appliances will never go out of fashion because they will fit in with whatever future styles you may have in mind too. Black is no longer a boring colour. It is a colour to be admired, enjoyed and respected. Make sure that you can find a manufacturer who can provide you with all the black kitchen appliances that you need and not just some of them to get the full impact of the complete style.

Sparring Equipments Protection

The uniforms/suits and Equipment Needs of Each Martial Art

All forms of Martial Arts require different things and generally the things which you will need for each one include:

* Uniforms

Depending entirely upon the Martial Arts class you have decided to join, usually you will need a uniform. For Karate the uniform consists of a white suit and it comes in two different sizes for both males and females. Firstly there is a children’s white uniform and then there is the adult white uniform. There is no real size difference between the male and the female suits which could be a problem for some.

If you are taking part in Tang Soo do then you will be wearing a similar suit to the Taekwondo one only it will have a V-neck and it can come with either a black V-neck or a white V-neck. The trousers are sold separately too so it is a little extra expense. Kung Fu and Tai Chi uniforms are completely black and again they come in either children’s or Adult’s sizes.

If you are going to be doing Kickboxing or ordinary boxing, then you are going to need skipping ropes, bag & boxing gloves. You will also need Thai/ boxing shorts or kickboxing trousers as well as inner elastic gloves which fit under the boxing gloves to keep your hands protected.

* Protective Wear

As well as a suits, you may have to invest in some protective wear such as a head guard which will help you to protect your head against attack when you are fighting. It is usually a good idea to ask your instructor beforehand whether protected gear is recommended as not all Martial Arts need protection.

Shin pads and other protective gear can be bought for your own peace of mind too so it all depends upon personal preference as well as if it is an actual requirement with the Martial Art that you have chosen.

Overall each style of Martial Art is different as stated and you really should contact your instructor before buying any equipment and before your first class. You can usually buy the equipment from the Martial Arts school or failing that there are also plenty of equipment online for you to choose from.

This article describes what is needed to participate in the martial arts.

A Review of Black Belt Magazine

The Black Belt Magazine is one of the largest and most well respected magazines that covers the entire spectrum of Self Defense Tactics. I remember going to the magazine stand when I was a child (I’m 40 now) and purchasing it. I use to like looking at all the cool mail order weapons you could purchase through the mail. I noticed that their magazine and their website have evolved as the years went by.

On their website they offer free, featured content on all of the major Martial Arts Styles. Also they have a Dojo Director, an Electronic Newsletter you can signup for updates and a classified ad section. They also have a Twitter, Facebook and Myspace page you can follow them on if you are into the Social Networking Scene. One of the events they cover is the International Mixed Martial Arts Expo.

Black Belt Magazine also covers just about every type of Self Defense discipline there is. Although I’ve never taken it, I’ve always been fascinated by Muay Thai Boxing. This magazine also has lots of genuinely written content covering the disciplines. I got engrossed in reading an article from Alex Gong who is a San Francisco resident who specializes in Muay Thai.

Ernesto Hoost was also a Muay Thai professional. He ended up winning the K-1 World Grand Prix 8 man open-weight tournament four times in a row. In the 1990’s he competed as a middle weight and eventually became the heavyweight champion and was later known as the “World’s Greatest Kickboxer” of all time. His first Muay Thai fight was in 1983 when he knocked out his opponent in the 2nd round. He also started training in the less hostile discipline of Savate.

If you visit the Black Belt Magazine website, you can get a free copy sent you to. And even if you choose not to do this, they have a lot of great free articles on their website you can read while you are visiting. Whether you are into Kempo, Aikido or Taekwondo they will have some great content for you to read.

The Black Belt of Martial Art Review

Karate belts are perhaps the most important aspect of a Karate uniform and if you pursuing training in this form of martial arts, you are going to need the right kinds of belts at different times in your training. As you move from one stage of the training to another, your progress is marked by the color of your Karate belt. If you reach the highest order of Karate training, you are endowed with a black belt.

Considering that belts are associated with prestige and status in Karate, it is not surprising if you want your belt to be unique and special. Your search ends at blackbeltshop.com. It provides a variety of different belts including Solid belts, Stripped belts, Camo belts and Custom belts. Explore the many options they offer before you choose your treasured belt.

While Solid color belts are the most common and popular types of belts used in Karate, there are many other choices available at blackbeltshop.com. The store keeps some of the most popular branded Karate belts. You will find Adidas black belts in this store. On the other hand, Century Advanced Deluxe Black belts are also available. In the Century brand itself there are a number of different options available. You may like to consider Century Satin Black Belt, or the Century Elite Satin Black Belt. You even get a choice in the width of your Century belts. You can get a Century Elite Black Belt with a width of two inches.

With Century belts, you also get the option of buying a Stripped black Belt to add a little uniqueness to your uniform. What is possibly even more eye-catching are the Century Two Toned Belts that come in a variety of double Karate colors. Century Stripped Belts are also available in White color, so that you get the chance of starting your training in style.

Amongst the most popular variety in Black Belts are the Embroidered Satin Black Belt and the Custom Embroidered Black Belt. The ability to mark your treasured belt with an important symbol, date or name, even your own, is such a tempting option, it is almost impossible to resist.

In the adjustable belt variety, Century offers Solid Color Adjustable Belts, Adjustable Belt with Black Stripe and Century Adjustable Striped White Belt. All these belts are designed to add a little dash of personality to your all-white uniform.

Blackbeltshop.com also offers Rank Stripes to those who prefer this system of marking progress rather than belts. They can simply be attached to your regular Karate Belt, and you can change your Rank Stripe every time you progress instead of having to change your belt itself.

The store also keeps a belt display rack and a ten level display rack which can also accommodate your Rank Certificate. This would make am impressive wall mount in any room.

When I had cancer I searched the shelves of the health food stores trying to find an effective cleanse and detox. There are many cleanses and detoxes out in the marketplace. Some may help you; some may not or even make things worse. Some of these products were made up by someone who found a formula in an herb book. They bought some herbs from who knows where. Then they put together a promotional package and went into business. I would not want to stake my health on a product like this.

I learned from a Thompsonian Naturopath about a formula that is older than this country (a long successful track record is important to me). This was 18 years ago; I bought wildcrafted and organic herbs mixed them and put them into capsules myself. That formula worked perfectly the crud just rolled out of me. Some of it was black as tar some had parasites in it. It went on for over a week, I was very toxic. Everyone in America is toxic, with over 10,000 chemicals in the air, water, and food, 3,000 of which have never been tested for toxicity.

About this time, you might be thinking, “oh I could never go through that”. My answer to that is “would you rather keep that stuff inside you”. Believe me there was nothing there that you would want to keep. Compared to radiation treatment, a cancer operation, or chemotherapy this is a walk in the park. I went to work every day and put in 8 hours of heavy construction without an accident.

You might also be thinking that you do not have that kind of toxic stuff in you. Believe me; I am no different than you. I lived the typical American life style. I was moderate in my habits. I never did anything in excess. I did eat white bread; used sugar moderately, drank coffee once a day, and ate some meat. I ate what I thought were many fruits and vegetables and I took vitamin supplements. I ate fast food maybe once a week. I was in very good physical shape. At that time, I held a second-degree black belt in Kenpo karate and I practiced daily. I was on no medications and I had never suffered from a major disease. Actually, I believe I was above average in my health habits.

I did many other Naturopathic techniques to rid myself of this cancer. I noticed that the cleaner by body got the more my level of health improved until I was symptom free. From this experience I went on to become a Thompsonian Naturopath.

A great number of people want to learn martial arts. Whether they’re doing it for self defense, stress management or just because they saw it on UFC or in the movies, martial arts is increasing in popularity. The trick is deciding on which one you want to do. Here are a few tips for choosing the martial arts form that is best for you.

It all starts with motivation. In fact, you won’t get very far in martial arts without it. If you’re doing it just because of the movies, UFC or PRIDE, chances are you’ll fizzle out early on. You have to have a real purpose such as stress management or self defense.

Some styles are more appropriate for stress management. Tai Chi, for example, isn’t a very pragmatic style for defending yourself from an attacker. Neither is Aikido. However, these styles are great for developing a clear head and letting go of the everyday grind.

If self defense is your preference, you should look to the fighting arts that were developed for military purposes. Krav Maga, Jiujitsu and Kali are examples of “real world” self defense techniques. MMA is also a great addition to this list. You won’t find spectacular spinning kicks or whirlwind punches in these forms, but they are geared towards efficiency.

Many martial arts forms are only useful in tournament situations. If your goal is to be a medal winner, competition martial arts may be your speed. Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Judo are fine examples of this. Just don’t expect much in the way of meditation techniques or usefulness in self defense.

In the end, what you aim to accomplish plays a key role in deciding what martial arts form you choose. Make sure you choose with this in mind, or you may find yourself disappointed.

Get The Right Fit With Your Martial Arts Uniform

Whether you’re just beginning martial arts training or you’ve been a practitioner for years, you may have encountered challenges in finding uniforms that have the right fit. Contrary to the popular saying, one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to martial arts uniforms. Moreover, a single size might not fit correctly either. After all, many of us aren’t proportionate; we may require a larger top and a smaller bottom, or vice versa. Unfortunately, though, many people – especially those just starting out – buy ill-fitting uniforms from their instructors. But before exploring the possibilities for well-fitting uniforms, let’s look at the basics:

Basic Martial Arts Uniforms

The type of uniform you need depends upon the type of martial arts training you’re taking. For example, karate uniforms are significantly different than judo uniforms. In the Japanese practice of judo, the judoka uses his opponent’s strength against him, and therefore needs a thick jacket that is difficult to grab. For that reason, judo uniforms – or judogi – typically consist of a pants and a quilted cotton jacket that is much thicker than karate jackets. There are also single weave jackets, which are lighter and more useful in long practice sessions to prevent overheating, and thick double weave jackets that are essential for competition.

In contrast to karate uniforms, judo uniforms, and tae kwon do uniforms, which are cotton and feature a crossover front with a belt closure, traditional kung fu jackets are typically made from silk and feature a front button closure. Those practicing kendo – the Japanese equivalent of fencing – usually wear a hakama and a kimono.

One of the latest trends in uniforms is martial arts cargo pants, which combine comfort with versatility. The cargo pants are available in a variety of colors, including camouflage prints, and usually have a stripe running down the outside of each leg.

Mixing and Matching

When you buy martial arts uniforms from a dojo or dojang, you normally buy a set consisting of the same size and color pants and top. Today, however, there are online sources where you can mix and match sizes and colors that fit both your body shape and your sense of style.

When you purchase martial arts uniforms online, it’s important to pay close attention to the site’s size charts and buy tops and pants that will fit well. It’s not uncommon for the best sites to carry sizes ranging from 000 (which would most likely fit a three-year-old) to 12 (which would fit someone well over six feet tall). Taking an extra moment to get the right fit will make you feel better and more confident while practicing or competing.

It’s also important to select the proper fabric weight for your specific martial art and skill level. A beginner, for example, might go with a medium weight karate jacket, while an experienced practitioner might need a super-heavyweight fabrication.

If you’re part of a demo team, you can easily outfit your entire team in their proper sizes, and find a wide selection of color schemes from which to choose.

Finding the right martial arts uniforms is, of course, only one element of learning the arts. However, when you get the right fit, you can more easily concentrate on developing the stances, values, and mental preparedness that will enable you to excel.
