If you’re a new comer to the Sparring Gear planet or would like to find out more about several optionative we’re confronted with with the purchase of sparring gear…

We have created a e-Learning training course to help information you in your sparring gear search.I have been practicing differing types of martial arts for over 25 years and I am also a Taekwondo School Owner in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Terminology and Required Gear

These can be a few phrases you’ve heard tossed around or may encounter:

WTF: World Taekwondo Federation

Instep: The top part of the foot, just beneath the ankle, where many kicks tend to be absorbed.

Hogu: Korean for Chest Protector, aka Trunk

Clash Shins: When two people throw a kick simultaneously, clashing shins, in effect- blocking the strike.

Round House: Typically the most popular kick. It begin by lifting bent knee in the direction of target, turning hip and simultaneously extending your bent knee, striking with instep.

Kukkiwon: the governing body in Korea that keeps track of all Taekwondo Blackbelts.

Karate, Style: A Japanese word meaning bare hand and describes a karate student’s power to provide a defense with out the use of weapons. Karate originate in Japan. There are a number of styles of Karate- Ryukue, Kenpo, Kempo… In my experience- Karate concentrate more on hand strikes and pressure points

Taekwondo: Korean Tae (hand) Kwon (foot) Do (way). The Way of the Hand and Foot. There are also many styles of Taekwondo. Taekwondo is known for its kicking

Equipment for Taekwondo Sparring:

The World Taekwondo Federation demands this particular equipment to compete in WTF sanctioned events:

World Taekwondo Federation Competition Rules

Contestant Uniform and Protective Equipment

1) The contestant shall wear the trunk protector, head protector, groin guard, forearm guards, shin guards, gloves and a mouthpiece before entering the contest area.

2) The groin guard, forearm guards and shin guards shall be worn beneath the Taekwondo uniform. The contestant shall bring this WTF-approved protective equipment, as well as gloves and the mouthpiece, for his/her personal use. Wearing any item on the head other than the head protector shall not be permitted.

Source: http://wtforg.cafe24.com/wtf_eng/site/rules/competition.html#4

If you have visited Martial Arts Supplies Sites, you may have seen the amazing choices when shopping for Sparring Gear.

Choices & The way to cut through the clutter

You might believe that highest defense would be the only concern while searching for sparring gear. People risking injuries for the sport or martial art discipline they appreciate. Our motivation to contend and succeed could be affected by the ability to protect ourselves.

With regards to Personal Safety, Why are there a lot of choices… It all relates controling for merchants to offer costs to suit anyone’s spending budget. When you start to reduce price, so too- does one slash Safety Levels.

There are essentially Three kinds, or levels of safety:

Cloth, also known as “Sock-type” gear. This particular gear gives the very least level of safety. You can buy Shin, Instep, Hand, Elbow and Forearm Cloth Gear.

Cloth gear is made of low-quality foam that is sewn within a sock-like stretchy cloth. The cloth is actually expandable. It is tough to get it on and even harder to get it off, as soon as wet!

Foam type gear, I do believe you will get just about every piece (head, hands, feet, chest, shins, Not Groin) Wouldn’t desire a foam dipped groin guard…

The safeguard levels is way better and so they are usually less difficult to get off and on. The problem with these is that they respond like a ball- when you make contact- there’s a bounce, instead of absorbing the power of the strike.

The 3rd degree of safety is Composite Gear. This sort of gear provides probably the most protection. If you’re not familiar with Kevlar, the stuff these people help to make bullet proof vests and helmets with- like Kevlar, High quality gear consists of numerous layers of very thick composite materials.

Like The rest in Life- You Get What You Pay For

Now that we’ve flattened the playing field and broken the mind-boggling options down to 3 basic forms of gear, at this point we could discover what to look for in high quality gear.

The way to Spot Poor Quality Gear

My good friend, Master Robert Caullette of Caullett’s Academy in Royal Palm Beach, says it best.

Master Caullett has been sparring competitively, almost all his life. He is now probably world’s most well known competitive sparring coaches. Master Caullett tells us in his own words:

“What to Look for When Shopping for Sparring Gear”

Link to Video

We will close things out with a few areas to consider while searching for good quality sparring gear.

Recommendations and Beneficial Suggestions

Buying Top quality Gear will save you numerous headaches:

If you decide to compete, you’ll have no problems with the tournament’s regulating body. All states possess their State-level “WTF”, here it’s the Florida Taekwondo Federation. These types of regulating Bodies will not question anything that’s WTF Certified.

Saving time and Complications returning sub-standard gear. I don’t know how many times a brand new student showed-up at sparring with cloth gear. “I’m sorry. You should have checked with us first- that gear is hazardous and can not be worn here… We will not allow equipment that doesn’t safeguard a student in my school.

Shop with assurance. Should you purchase the best style (Taekwondo, Karate, etc.) and is certified through the world governing body- you can’t go wrong.

Sign-UP for the $5 Off Online Coupon. You can use the coupon anytime. The code will be emailed so you can store it away until you are ready to use it

And Most importantly, You or Your Child will be safeguarded! A short while ago i wrote this small post on my blog:

Top 3 Reasons to purchase High quality Sparring Gear

March 25th, 2009

Reason #1 Safty

If you consider it… the main reason many of us purchase sparring gear would be to protect our body. I don’t know about you, but whenever I get struck I want to lessen the pain whenever possible.

If you purchase equipment for somebody

or

Somebody buys it for you usually Cost is the thing that is certainly thought about!

We will leave #1 at that…

Reason #2 Permanence

Excellent gear will last many, many, many times longer. And along with the extra lifespan- the equipment’s potential to guard will not lower. I admit I’ve bought crappy gear in the past- but I had to exchange it- when I did, it was with quality gear. Gear that I have to this day- in excellent condition. Learn from my personal error.

Reason #3 It’s Simpler to get Off and on

Whether or not the gear is perfect for you or your child, keep in mind trying to put the sock-type gear on? The tugging? Plus your Master yelling at you to get your butt in gear (no pun intended)… What about trying to get it off when it got all sweaty… Ugh!

Good quality gear goes on effortless and comes off even a lot quicker.

I really hope You have gained knowledge some important lessons regarding sparring gear. Shoot me an e-mail if you want.

Mixed Martial Arts Fighting, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Fighting – Training Tips for Repetition Drilling of Techniques

When first learning a new mixed martial arts fighting technique whether at the fundamental level or the more advanced it is important that we chunk it down into smaller, easily learned units. Once easily assimilated chunks are obtained these must be practiced with repetition to learn them. However, just repeating them over and over again in a session has its limitations.

Studies on a simple nervous system have shown that any more than 10 repetitions of a task in a session does not result in any increase to retention, in addition, performing only one session of learning a new piece of material results in very little retention over a long period as those of you who have been involved in training for serious mixed martial arts fighting are well aware.

The most useful method of repetition drilling to gain the most effective retention is to spread the repetitions over a number of sessions.
A method that has shown a great deal of effect is to carry out 7 to 10 repetitions of a particular technique in a training session. And then carry out at least nine repeat review sessions over several days or weeks. The first repeat session can be within the same session. I would suggest near the end of the session. The following one a day after, then a week etc. The closer the review sessions are together the quicker the optimal retention is obtained.

Another common problem, that many of us experience in mixed martial arts fighting and Muay Thai Fighting, is that of boredom when training the number of repetitions required for drilling the techniques adequately. This is detrimental to retention as the learning process is seriously impaired when we are not concentrating.
Disguising the repetitions in drills, combinations and games that utilize the particular skill involved is a very practical way that will assist you to get around this problem and allow you to increase the versatility of game by drilling the techniques with different set ups, combinations or counters being used against them.

Another more fundamental strategy that I use, particularly in working through my Muay Thai Fighting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Fighting techniques, is to repetition the techniques as many times as I can until boredom is noticed, recording the number of repetitions performed in my training diary and then repeating the process in another training session. When using this strategy just develop a determined discipline to complete a predetermined number of repetitions. I would suggest a minimum of 60 spread over a 2 year period for maximum retention.

Bear in mind that this is for the learning and retention of a new technique, not the optimal refinement of it for the highest level of effectiveness that may be required for the rigors of competition in both mixed martial arts fighting and Muay Thai Fighting. This requires the development and sharpening of the various attributes required for optimal performance of the technique, such as: speed, timing, flow, balance, connectivity to the next move, variation adjustment, corrections in balance, preparedness for reaction to the opponent’s movement, etc.

Taking your mixed martial arts fighting skill to this level requires many more repetitions and exposing the performance of the technique to increasing levels of risk through controlled and on to random sparring.

To ensure the best learning of the technique start by learning and drilling the technique under totally cooperative conditions to get it right, this is the
retention period discussed above.

Once a good level of efficacy is obtained, then try to use the technique in controlled sparring conditions or controlled performance drills in which your training partner presents moderate problems to deal with. As your efficacy increases start to utilize it in your sparring, at first against less experienced opponents working up to opponents of higher levels.

Using this strategy for developing and drilling your techniques will not only enhance your game but also make repetition drilling far more enjoyable when training for mixed martial arts fighting.

Karate Then and Now

Upon hearing the word “karate,” people often think of the physical aspects of this martial art. The kicks, punches, and other seemingly impossible moves of karate masters are just the surface of what is truly a martial art steeped in philosophy. For anyone who wants to get into karate, it would be advisable to understand some of the long history and deep philosophy that have helped to make karate what it is today. By understanding the philosophy and history of the defensive martial art known as karate, people will be better disposed to take advantage of the many physical and mental benefits that karate has to offer. This article will cover the basics of the history and philosophy of karate, as well as discuss karate in the contemporary context.

Karate: history of the martial art

Much like other forms of martial arts, karate has a long and colorful history. Karate originates from the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, though it is a martial art that has been heavily influenced by the Chinese kung-fu and the Koren taekwondo. In the 1300s and 1400s, numerous Chinese families moved to Okinawa, Japan and they brought with them different forms of Chinese martial arts. These martial arts as well as other parts of the Chinese culture were being assimilated into Japanese culture.

In the 1600s, a policy was enacted in Japan, banning the use of weapons. It was during this time that karate began to take root and flourish in Japan. The Japanese phrase “karate” means “empty hand,” because it was developed as a form of self-defense during the weapon ban. This martial art would take on many of the Chinese “kata” (“shape” or “model”) used in their martial arts, reinventing them and perfecting them into different karate kata, or fighting stances and postures. Numerous people would begin teaching different forms of karate in and around Japan from the 1800s and onwards.

Karate: a philosophy of honor

Many different forms of karate have developed throughout the years, each with its own philosophy and perception of the martial art. In its original context, however, the philosophy of karate is a form of self-defense that should only be used as a last resort. Those who practice karate train their bodies and their minds, promoting not only mental and physical health, but also spiritual health. The philosophy of karate is vast, but the most influential factors have been Taoism, Buddhism, and the code of Bushido.

Karate today

Karate has come a long way since its origins in the Ryukyu Islands. While there are still a number of people training and living in the traditional ways of karate, this martial art has become a popular sport. Numerous karate tournaments are held all around the world. Karate dojos, where people can go to learn and train in this martial art, have cropped-up all around the world. Since karate has become so wide-spread, many countries have developed their own styles of karate. In the Philippines, for example, arnis karate has developed as a combination of karate and the Filipino martial art of arnis.

Whether people are into karate as a sport, hobby, or profession, this martial art offers many physical and mental benefits. Beyond the physical and mental benefits, however, karate also has a rich history and philosophy that people can learn from. With its ability to enrich and improve the lives of those who study and practice it, karate is truly a powerful martial art.

Women In The Martial Arts

by Anita Wilson

1st Lady Assistant to Sensei Henry Ellis
Ellis Schools of Traditional Aikido
Anita Wilson was graded to Shodan by Jiro Nakazono Sensie the second son of the legendary Budo master who had graded her teacher Henry Ellis in 1963.

I was born in West London in 1963, my father was very involved in the martial arts and a dan grade in Karate he was also a dealer in ancient Japanese arms and armour, although my father has an antiques shop in London’s Bond Street, my home was more like a samurai warriors dressing room, with original suits of Japanese armour complete with very frighting face masks that would frighten the life out of my friends when ever they came to visit, there were also very many valuable swords yari and naginata spears.

The Masters

My father would travel around the world searching for the best quality weapons, what intrigued me the most as a child was all these strange visitors that would come to my home, the famous Otani family were regular visitors with Sensei Matsuro Otani 7th dan Judo the UK National Coach, Kenshiro Abbe Sensei, Tomio Otani Sensei the UK National Coach for Kendo, his visitors were like the who’s who of martial arts, as recently as two weeks ago I was pleased to meet with Sensei Kazuo Chiba 8th dan when he came to see my father.

Introduction to Aikido

As a child I did a little Karate with my father but nothing serious until 1992 when I went to the local Aikido dojo in Bracknell, Berkshire, UK. All those years with my father and his Japanese weapons must have had a latent but profound effect on me, as I watched Sensei Ellis teaching his Positive Style of Traditional Aikido I knew there and then that this was the martial art for me.

The Hard Training Begins

When I started Aikido I made a point of training with the men and they treated me as one of them. With regular practice I progressed. I had now developed the hard training bug and started courses in physical training and amateur weight lifting, after a few years of hard work I became a fully qualified fitness instructor-personal trainer and amateur weight lifting coach, the high light of all this effort was when Sensei Ellis promoted me to assistant coach of the Ellis Schools of Traditional Aikido (ESTA) two years later he promoted me to first lady assistant to himself, there had never ever been a lady assistant in all the long history of the ESTA, Sensei put me on a three month trial and 8 year on I am still here.

In 1994 I received my coaching certificate from the British Aikido Board (BAB) which is the governing body for Aikido in the UK. Once I became assistant to Sensei Ellis I became involved in assisting in teaching both men and women and also helping with the children’s classes.

The First Seminar

Sensei Ellis asked if I would like to take part in a very large and important seminar in Liverpool in the North of England, Sensei Ellis is not one of those teachers who has a pet uke follow him around to fly all over the mat at a touch or a glance, he prefers to try to involve all the students who attend his seminars if possible, knowing this I felt very privileged but nervous when Sensei told me there would be about 700 students from various martial arts, I think the phrase “Being thrown in at the deep end” is applicable here.

On arrival at the venue I was amazed to see so many students from so many countries, UK-France-Germany-Italy-India-Austria are just some that I can recall. Sensei Ellis was asked to take the first class of approximately 50 dan grades from various martial arts. Sensei had me demonstrate 100 press-ups on the backs of my wrists with fingers pointing both inwards and outwards. When I had finished and was in the raised position Sensei sat on my back (he did not warn me of this) and carried on with his lecture. Sensei suggested that those who wanted to should try this exercise. It was amazing to see all these black belts struggling. Later I had a little crowd around me wanting to inspect my wrists, I explained that this exercise is standard for both seniors and juniors in our schools.

I was now feeling a little more confident when Sensei pointed out that there were six young dan grades who had arrived late and were respectfully waiting for permission to come onto the mat. Sensei asked me to show them what we had been teaching so far, they were all wearing black gi’s and when I approached and invited them on the mat, they scowled as if to say “hey, we have not traveled all the way from London to be taught by a women” as I showed the first technique “nikkyo” a wrist locking action, the first guy tried to resist me, I applied the technique as shown to me so many times by Sensei and almost put him through the mat. I thought he would be upset with me, but as he got up he asked “How did you do that?”. He then wanted me to do the technique on all the others, now I had their attention and they were a great bunch of guy’s. I really enjoyed teaching them. At the end of the seminar, as we were leaving the hall to head for the car park, these six guy’s were waiting in a line and bowed to me simultaneously with a smile and said to Sensei Ellis ” You have a strong lady assistant there ,sensei” Sensei replied ” That is why she is my assistant”. That was my first seminar and one that I will never forget.

I have been involved in many other seminars with my Sensei and they were always good, but I was never so overawed as I was at my first one, or so I thought. Then Sensei Ellis asked if I would like to visit New Mexico in the USA for a seminar. The seminar was to be held in Alamogordo NM, where Sensei’s USA representative in the US lives and works at the Space Museum. Sensei visits New Mexico every year and we have another Ellis dan grade in Texas, Al Montemar. I had always wanted to visit the US and jumped at the opportunity. We made the trip into a vacation for friends and family. We taught members of the USAF and German Air Force at Holloman AFB, which included a guided tour of the base and various fighter aircraft, including the Stealth bomber. Sensei Rogers is an instructor who teaches students from the USAF, Highway Patrol, police and some members of the United States Marshals.

While in the US, I also visited the Grand Canyon and Phoenix. I intend to move to Phoenix to live within the next two to three years. Sensei Ellis has a book on aikido coming out next spring in the US titled “Positive Aikido” which I am pleased to be featured in, Sensei Rogers is a journalist by profession and has worked on this book for the past two years and it will be published in the US. There are several publishers interested in the book so we are all very excited about this latest project. I hope to be visiting the US again next year and I hope to be there for the launching of the book.

For the martial artists out there I would like to add one more comment about the proposed book. Where as most Aikido books spend a great deal of time harmonizing with the planets and the universe, there will be none of that in this book, Sensei always tells students to come out of the clouds and get back on the tatami because “This is where it all happens” and he also often says ” leave the dancing to Fred Astair” (who is Fred Astair?).

Boxing has been a very popular sport since its start. But as far as the case of boxing is concerned the sport is not only dependant on the ability of the person but it is very important that the boxer wears the right sports equipment. Boxing gloves is one of the most important components that a person or a boxer needs to possess before he steps into the ring. Hence it is very important to note that choosing the right boxing glove is very important so as to ensure that the boxers gives his best shot. The gloves are very important equipment which ensures the safety of the knuckles in particular.

Incase you are planning to step into the boxing ring sooner or later then it is very important that you have one of the finest pairs of boxing gloves before you step into the ring. Before you are looking forward to buy the first red pair of gloves it is important that you know the basics about the boxing glove. The most recommended pair of the boxing glove is the leather gloves. Quite obvious that they cost more but it is important to remember the fact that in the initial stages when you start first the most primary concern is safety and it is important to remember the fact that they are very costly but they last for a longer period of time. Leather gloves are the best option that you can go in for than the gloves made out of any other material. However the concern of the boxing gloves is a matter of concern when you are intending yourself to train harder, in other cases incase you are intending to go in for a fitness class then the material out of which the gloves are made is not much of a concern.

The next aspect which you need to consider when you are intending to buy the gloves is the manner in which they close. The boxing gloves of the usual classic style which we come across in the prize fights are tied on to the boxer’s hands along with laces, the laces are used so that it is ensured that you do not come out in any way when we think of shoes the laces ensure that they do not come out in any way. Another option of closing is the Velcro fit which ensures the gloves can be worn by everyone irrespective of the fact that they can be put by us and the straps ensure perfect fit. Incase you are just an average person who is just intending to use the gloves for training purpose then the Velcro fit gloves are just the apt fit for you.

The next consideration which matters a lot is the size of the boxing gloves, it is important that you select the apt size of small, medium and large depending on your size. For women the average size is the medium. The sizes of the gloves vary with the different manufacturers.
